Currently, the consumer market with its diverse manifestations becomes a sphere of great importance for the reforms as a whole and for the improvement of living standards in particular. This sphere of the consumer market is closely connected with the activities of all economic sectors and serves as an interlink in the process of bringing products and services to consumers.
The development indicators are significant factors of economic and social well-being of society as a whole. People's daily needs and problems are reflected in the formation of the consumer market.
In recent years, the market of consumer products and services has undergone fundamental changes: a significant expansion of the network of new permanent shops, modern architecture and retail formats is observed.
The infrastructure is getting increasingly saturated with the development of the consumer market, improving the material and technical base and increasing competition at the same time. This situation necessitates the use of modern technologies and modern types of services and also a better quality of personnel training.
About 20% of all workers employed by enterprises and organizations of the city are employed in the sphere of the consumer market.

Omsk retail turnover in 2015 was 254.6 billion rubles.
Practically all formats of modern trade are represented in the city of Omsk:
- permanent trading network (shops, minimarkets, supermarkets, shopping malls and retail markets);
- non-stationary retail facilities (kiosks, pavilions, concession stands, vending machines, stalls);
- fair retail.

There’s about 270 malls in Omsk with a total area of 600,000 sq m.
Nowadays Omsk is home to a number of big retail chains, among which are:
- Metro Cаsh & Carry, IKEA, Auchan, Media Markt, Leroy Merlin, OBI etc. (international chains);
- Lenta, Planeta Holiday, Sibiriada, Holdy Discounter, Magnit, Okay etc. (trans-regional chains);
- Pobeda, Eda!, Nash Magazin, PetroL, Domashniy, Nizkotsen, Produkty 24 Chasa, NovaTor, Omich i K? Samovar etc. (regional chains).
Mixed-use retailers, such as AT-Market, Gertsen Plaza, Triumph, Mayak, Continent, Flagman, Kaskad, Europa, are progressing too.
Current shopping center floor space per 1,000 population is 1,045.9 sq m, which is 1.7 times higher than Omsk statutory minimum (619.99 sq m).
Food Service
Public catering plays an increasingly important role in the lives of the inhabitants of Omsk. Today, the goal of public catering companies is not only satisfying nutritional needs, but also organization of leisure time. The rapid development of the public catering is influenced by the increasing pace of life of a modern city dweller.
Cafes are the most common format of public catering in the city. Currently the fast-food format is booming (Kurochka Ryadom, KFC, Subway, Burger King, McDonalds and others).

Concept-based restaurants usually present ethnic cuisine: Chinese (Yasuan), Italian (Mamma Mia), Oriental (Chaikhana), Russian, European, etc. Besides, Japanese cuisine is on the march: there’s more and more restaurants and take away shops appearing—they offer sushi and rolls (Sushi Terra, Planeta Sushi, Zebry, Foodzy, Yaponsiy domik, etc.).
Food service turnover in 2015 was 11.6 billion rubles.
Non-Manufacturing Business
There are more than 3,500 facilities of the service sector in the city. However, not all areas of the service sector develop uniformly. The largest proportion falls to share of hair salons, car repair shops, the least developed are dry cleaning and laundries.

Recent years city people attach great importance to house building and home renovation: more than 300 companies in this market serve to prove the foregoing. Also more than 260 companies produce and repair furniture.
More than 500 companies produce and repair furs and leather, hats, knitwear and shoes.
Local hotels show solid growth. Hospitality industry gives clients accommodation, meals and organized leisure activities. In Omsk there are about 80 hotels providing more than 2,500 beds totally.
Providing repair and tailoring/sewing services of clothing/footwear is one of the priority directions in the development of small business in the city of Omsk.
Paid services capacity in 2015 was 76 billion rubles.
