Omsk is the seventh most populated Russian city. There are only two cities on the Ural territory with the number of inhabitants exceeding one million: Omsk and Novosibirsk.

According to preliminary data of the 2010 Russian National Population Census, the population of Omsk is 1mln 154 thousand citizens. The city population increased by 20 thousand citizens or 1.8% comparing to the 2002 Census. The population growth has changed due to the consistent policy of the Administration of the city of Omsk pursued in the area of social assistance to population.

Omsk is a multiethnic city of Russia. The prevailing inhabitants are Russians (87.5%), Kazakhs (2.8%), Ukrainians (2.8%), Tatars (1.9%), Germans (1.8%).

The ratio of people with higher and secondary vocational education to the total number of inhabitants is 43.8%. The number of people with higher and incomplete higher education makes 23.6%, secondary vocational education – 30.8% (population aged 15 and over).

The average number of employees of large and medium enterprises of the city is 317.4 thousand people. The largest portion of this number accounted for the employees of manufacturing industries — 22.1%.

Much of the population is engaged in small business activity. By estimate, the average number of small enterprise employees was about 90 thousand people in 2010.

As of January 1, 2010, forty-seven thousand individual entrepreneurs are registered in the city. The number of inhabitants engaged in entrepreneurial activity without establishing a legal entity and employed by individuals was, by estimate, 110 thousand people in 2010. The main areas of small business activity are trade, service sector, real estate operations sector, construction and industrial production.

In 2010 the inflation was influenced by demand constraints. In this regard the consumer price index for goods and paid services in Omsk was 108.5% in 2010 (Russian Federation — 108.8%).

The average per capita cash income amounted, by estimate, to 17,160 rubles per month in 2010 and has grown by 6.8% compared to the year 2009.

The average monthly salary of employee of large and medium enterprises amounted to 19,317.1 rubles in 2010 and has increased by 12.3% compared to the year 2009. The increase of salary amount was registered in all fields of economic activity.

The average per capita subsistence minimum (for Omsk Region) amounted to 5,088 rubles in 2010 and has grown by 4.1% compared to the year 2009.
