Omsk is situated in the south of West Siberian Plain at the confluence of Irtysh and Om Rivers, in the centre of the south of Omsk Region. The coordinates of the city of Omsk: the latitude of 55.00 degrees north, the longitude of 73.00 degrees east.

The territory is relatively flat with prevailing elevation of 100–140 m above sea level (height in the centre of the city is 90 m).

Omsk is   located in the temperate climatic zone. The average temperature of the most cold month (January) is – 19°C, and of the most warm month (July) is + 18°C.

The city area is 566.9 sq. km. Built-up lands occupy 64.5% of the city territory.

Since 2004, owing to the environmental protection measures, the air pollution level has been decreased by more than 30%. This was facilitated by the implementation of new purification technologies and by strengthening of government control.

Total green belt area in Omsk is 13,047 ha, where shared facilities occupy 1,606.13 ha, planting of streets and roads — 603.4 ha, urban forests — more than 1,800 ha. District land improvement agencies serve 170 public gardens, boulevards and parks with the total area of 800 ha. 

Urban nature sanctuary Natural Park “Ptichia gavan” was created to preserve the unique natural park on the territory of Omsk.
